very lengthy and in depth read. It held my interest more when the author gave actual historical accounts. It's an amazing book. I carry it with me at all times. Thanks .
It's easy to gather dates times and inner turmoil when western records are easily obtainable. Its even easier to manipulate the actions to obtain an unfavorable opinion of the Christians in general. The biggest source of proof presented of the authors aims is right in the beginning.
Pope Urban unifying the Christians to start centuries long warfare.... The seizure of Jerusalem by the Islamic seljuks is the catalyst. Just like the raids on Rome, southern Italy as a whole, Sicily, the Iberian peninsula that occurred many decades before this. The unified front of the Islamic forces were the ones who started the centuries long conflict.
There's a lot going on in this book, as the author Patrick Auerbach appears to have a wide range of themes and a deep knowledge of this period in history. The political, social, and cultural realities of this time all inform what is a well written and epic story about the Crusades. As a bit of a history buff, it was fun to follow these various battles, and to listen to the author navigate this troubling and turbulent time in the world through a non-fiction lens.
This book is very thorough from beginning to end and easy to read. It really indicts the Catholic Church in its murder of innocent Jews and Slavs and shows how wasteful the church was and is in its pursuit of ridiculous goals. It is clear where John Lennon and the Beatles found their hatred for religion.
Nice read! This all around designed book is exceptionally savvy and clarifies a considerable measure of fascinating realities about the campaigns. I would prescribe this book for perusers inspired by this subject. Well book.
Massive, comprehensive book about the Crusades. I learned a ton and enjoyed it, but it's a bit of a slog at times. Consider yourself warned. Provides a good overview of the motivations (and motivators) for the Crusades, key battles, political and military figures, etc. Very good.
Such a good reference book. You will be learning important historical facts about series of crusades especially the first crusade which was the most successful one. The author did a very great research. You will be satisfy with the details and facts that this book has revealed.
